Caswell County Schools Using MLK Day For Snow Make-Up | digtriad.com

Yanceyville, NC -- Caswell County Schools named Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as one of the days used to make-up missed school due to snow.

Most school systems across the country are closed Monday in observance of the national holiday.

Caswell County Superintendent Douglas Barker said the board looked at the number of days students missed and the available calendar holidays through the end of the year. The board decided to pick the first one in case more snow cancels classes.

Barker said four days are needed for students to take exams and they will begin exams on Monday. Friday, January 21, will be used for make-up tests.

When asked about going to school next Saturday instead of MLK Day, Barker said the the board thought more students would attend school on MLK Day than a Saturday.

"I can assure our board did not look at that as being something taking away from Martin Luther King's things that he stood for or what he accomplished during his lifetime and what his legacy has been since that time," explained Barker.

The website marks January 11 as the day the school system recognized the holiday. Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only required holidays in the school calendar.

He said January 11 will be considered the holiday because there wasn't an option for teachers to work.

Students will be out of school on January 26 as a protected work day. Barker said the law requires the work day at the end of a grading period.

North Carolina calendar law says schools can't start before August 25 and can't go after June 10. Barker said his school system can't finish first semester testing and still finish school by June 10.

Other systems can claim hardship and be in school past June 10 if they had a pattern for three years of inclement weather, but Barker said Caswell County doesn't meet that requirement.

One high school, one middle school and four elementary schools make up the Caswell County Schools system.

The Charlotte chapter of the NAACP is criticizing a decision to have students attend school on MLK Day.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the group called Wednesday for local clergy to ask church members to keep their children home on Monday.

Charlotte City Councilman Patrick Cannon also criticized the scheduling decision as disrespectful.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Peter Gorman says state law concerning the school calendar gives local districts very little flexibility in scheduling makeup days.
