It started last April when he started vomiting pure blood. Throughout his entire life Greg Hasselman, 24, has been dealing with the effects of a congenital heart defect he was born with and now it has taken a turn for the worst. He had his first surgery at four months of age. He’s had four open-heart surgeries with his last surgery being at four years of age when doctors installed a fontan to control his blood flow. Now the fontan is failing and blood is trying to find another route. He first developed a condition called Esophageal Varicies. Since the veins of the esophagus are not made to handle that type of blood flow, the veins rupture, causing them to bleed, which is how the stomach fills with blood. Hasselman lost so much blood the first time that a transfusion was necessary. “We have been told that since Greg has already had so many open heart procedures, the amount of scar tissue is already at its max,” Melanie said. “The next time he is cracked open has got to be the last. The surgeon at Mayo does not feel like doing the cardiac surgery would be enough to lower the pressures to where they need to be for the heart and liver to function properly. So this surgery is not something they will do.” “This procedure has been done in the United Kingdom and in Europe. However, they have had such a low success rate they have stopped practicing the procedure,” Melanie said. “The Mayo Clinic is where Greg will be getting the transplant. We have scheduled appointments starting Aug. 22 to finish the process of getting Greg on the transplant list.” “Greg’s blood type is both positive and negative,” Melanie said. “Positive because the AB- transplant list is quite smaller than the others for other blood types. Negative because of the few people that have AB-. He will still have a waiting period. They have not given us a timeframe as far as when he has to have the transplant. We have been told that until he gets one, things will only continue to go downhill. His life expectancy as well as when the organs will become available are both unknown as it is up to God at that point, or whatever other religion others believe in.” “Since we had been under the hope that Greg would be a candidate for heart surgery only (replacing the fontan) for so long, we had not started any fundraisers,” Melanie added. “It was not until we got back from our last Mayo trip (July 16) that we knew only the double transplant would be an option.
