Pekin's Mashie's simply aces

Mashie's is smashing.

The food works as a lingering meal or quick bite. The atmosphere oozes a casual class, not at all stuffy. And the service moves fast and friendly.

A mashie is a pre-20th Century, wood-shaft club that resembles a 5-iron. That makes sense, as Mashie's sits at Sunset Hills Golf Club.

On our visit, a fat, square bar rippled with the sound of basketball announcers' urgency and viewers' cheering. Nearby, in the sports pub, you can grab a low, round table for drinks and/or snacks.

There's also a simple dining room: white tablecloths and black wooden chairs. Expansive picture windows stretch across two walls, affording a view of the course and the backs of houses at a nearby subdivision.

The menu covers wide ground: 15 sandwiches, nine salads, seven burgers and eight entrees, mostly steak and chicken. From the appetizer offerings, we went with the smothered fries ($7.50), a huge piling of spud strips mingled with mozzarella, pepper jack, minced green onions and chopped bacon. It's more than enough for two, and delightful.

My guest opted for the BrewHouse burger ($8.75), a patty brushed lightly with spicy chipotle BBQ sauce and topped with thick-cut bacon, sharp cheddar and ale onions - all shoved into a toasted brioche bun. The beef, cooked to order at medium, was succulent and flavorful. On the side came homemade chips; the waiter was nice enough to bring a small container of Mashie's homemade onion dip, which is light and tasty.

I went with the classic rib-eye ($18). The 12-ounce cut was not only marbled well and cooked to a perfect medium-rare, but slathered in Gorgonzola horseradish. The mingling of favors and textures was outstanding.

The dish also came with asparagus spears and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. The side salad involved a nice mix of lettuce, tomato shredded cheddar and croutons.

Of several desserts, we tried two. The cheesecake chimichanga ($5) featured apple cheesecake rolled into a floor tortilla, fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar. It's completed with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel.

The cookie shots ($1 each) are served in small jiggers. We tried five; four (silk tuxedo; New York-style; lemon; and chocolate chip) were good, while the fifth (white-chocolate raspberry) was outstanding.

Through all of this, our server was fantastic: very quick and attentive, but not cloying. He seemed to like being there.

Give your guests packets of special hot chocolate and two mugs in a basket with a book of love poems and instructions for them to sit and read the book together over a cup of special homemade hot chocolate. Make a centerpiece of homemade chocolate roses on sticks that are decorated to look like stems and have each guest take one of the chocolate roses home with them at the end of the night. In the kid’s area set up a station where kids can make their own chocolate to keep them occupied. Just make that they are supervised and that aprons are available to protect their nice clothes. Have a chocolate fountain flowing with a special “signature” chocolate flavor and have plenty of strawberries and other fresh fruit available for dipping. A great wedding favor is to package a few homemade chocolates with a small, handwritten recipe book full of great recipes for homemade chocolates. Give the recipes fun names like “Spice up your marriage Spicy Hot Chocolate”.
