Quake appeal: Portland youngsters raise funds
DETERMINED youngsters put their best foot forward to complete a coastal walk for the Echo’s Japan Appeal.
The group of eight and nine-year olds walked five miles from the Portland Heights Hotel to Brewer’s Quay in Weymouth to raise around £250.
They had all seen coverage of the tsunami on the news and wanted to do what they could to help, walk organiser Michelle Inglis said.
Michelle, 27, of Portland, said: “My daughter Chloe Walker was worried about her grandparents who were away on a cruise at the time of the tsunami.
“Although they were miles away from it she decided she wanted to help people who had been affected.”
Chloe’s friends supported her for the walk and were sponsored by their friends and family.
Led by Michelle’s partner Steve Walker, the group travelled through Fortuneswell with a stop at Chesil Beach for lunch, then followed the Rodwell Trail to Brewer’s Quay, where parents picked their youngsters up.
Michelle added: “We got all the kids involved and they were all excited about it.
“Our daughter Chloe has been to the spot where the Asian tsunami struck and has spoken to people about it.
“She’s very aware of what’s going on in the world.
“We’ve been showing the children what the money does to help and want to show them what the ShelterBoxes will do to help the people out there.”
joanna.davis@dorsetecho.co.uk Although we have wound up our appeal money is still coming in from fundraising events and we are happy to pass the money on to ShelterBox.
The Dorset Echo joined forces with the charity to send urgent supplies to the devastated region of Japan worst affected by the quake and tsunami.
If you still want to help you can send a cheque made payable to ShelterBox to Japan Appeal, Dorset Echo, Fleet House, Hampshire Road, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 9XD.
Or you can drop donations into our offices on Hampshire Road or Antelope Walk, Dorchester .
If you would like to help in any other way please call the newsdesk on 01305 830999 or email newsdesk@dorsetecho.co.uk.

COSVIL BOOKS: On Chesil Beach - Ian McEwan
Thus begins this 2007 novel from one of the world's great writers. It is an opening sentence that hooks the reader unlike any of his many other books which ease us into their complexity. On Chesil Beach has been described as 'an exploration of sex in the England of the 1960's'. Indeed the novel is about the single sex scene which stars Edward and Florence. It is their wedding night and they are in a hotel room overlooking Chesil Beach. Edward wants sex, Florence thinks he doesn’t, and that is what drives the story. They ate the melon in less than two minutes while the lads, instead of waiting out in the corridor, stood well back, near the door, fingering their bow ties and tight collars and fiddling with their cuffs. Their blank expressions did not change as they observed Edward offer Florence, with an ironic flourish, his glazed cherry. Playfully she sucked it from his fingers and held his gaze as she deliberately chewed, letting him see her tongue, conscious that in flirting with him like this she would be making matters worse for herself. What happens in the bedroom afterwards is the tragedy of this very readable, powerful book. McEwan's writing is in top modernist form here, not a word out of place, everything meaning something. He also understands pre-modern Englishness better than any other living writer, the Englishness of deceit, evasion, repression and regret. Wonderful novel.
