Realtor Q and A: Not all buyers like pets

Q.: What shall we do with our pets when our house is on the market?

A.: Realtors get asked that question all the time. It is really difficult for us to answer that truthfully, especially when we love our pets too! We consider them family, but. . .! Not everyone has the same fond feelings for pets. Some people are actually afraid of them. I've been in some homes where I've seen boa constrictors, lizards, iguanas, ferrets, alligators, rabbits, cats, dogs, hamsters, birds, turtles, fish, etc. They are all considered "pets" to some people.

The truth is not all people see these animals as pets. So when you are ready to put your house on the market, you have to take that into consideration. How bad do you want to sell your house? You know my favorite saying, "You can't sell your house the way you live in it!" So. . .what do you do with your extended family? Well there are several things you can do.

1. If they are in tanks or cages, you might want ask your friends or neighbors to "baby-sit" them for awhile.

2. If they are "free roaming animals," you might want to come home and take them for a walk while the house is being shown or put them in a cage in the garage or basement.

3. If it's an "in-door" cat, you might want to leave a note on the door indicating that the cat is not allowed outdoors or visa versa.

Your animals are feeling the stress, just like you. They don't know who all these strangers are walking through their homes. They might start having little "accidents." I know it's hard on everyone and everything, but we must do what we have to do to sell your house so you can move on.

There is nothing worse than coming up the walkway and hearing and seeing dogs barking out the windows or at the door. Most Realtors will not open the door for fear of themselves and their clients of being bitten or jumped on. You don't need a lawsuit on your hands.

Animals also have an odor that can be displeasing to buyers. Homes that smell of smoke or animal, is one of the biggest turn-offs to buyers. If it's really bad, you might have to replace your carpets before you put your house on the market and buy a new doggie bed. If you have a kitty litter in the house, make sure it's changed & cleaned everyday. Same goes for birds, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, etc., if you can't find anyone to take them for a mini-vacation. Make sure the animal's dishes are cleaned and their toys are stored away. Hide the doggie bed under your bed or store it in the basement or garage.

Your house will need to be 'bunny-proofed', as bunnies like to chew and dig. Rabbits are also very sensitive and are prone to stress-related illness. Rabbits and small children do not mix well. Children love to pick up, hold, love and cuddle their pets

These animals also don't need constant care so if the novelty wears off within a few days, the most damage done is the money spent on a forgotten toy. Buying stuffed animals rather than live ones is best for the animal and the child both!

Why Do Dogs Like Stuffed Toys? | Fluffy Fables

I think that dogs feel closer to being a dog when they actually have a stuffed toy in their mouth. They feel that they have caught it. They can carry it around, they can claim it, they can retrieve it (especially retrievers), and it is theirs. And, it feels good to them. After a while, the smell of this stuffed toy becomes awful to us, but great to the dogs.

By far, the cheapest way to keep your dog in stuffed toys is buying cheap, right sized stuffed animals at garage/yard sales. I wash them in hot water, and a bit of Solumel (Melaleuca household cleaner that helps get rid of bacteria and it is animal and nature friendly), this is very important! Then, I remove all the detachable; lose things like eyes, whiskers, etc. These toys are a very cheap alternative to expensive pet store toys.
