Sounds like this banker is all wet

After a series of delays and miscues in the processing of a loan – including a request for information about her husband — Barbara Picco finally gave it up. And then she sent a terse email to her local Bank of America canceling the deal: “Not proceeding with loan. Not married. Not happy with runaround.” Six minutes later, Picco got a return email from the loan officer acknowledging the cancellation, with a note that might have been an attempt to make nice. Depends, I guess. “I apologize for any incontinence,” the banker wrote.

Street wise: Project 25, the collaborative United Way project to end chronic homelessness in San Diego, is aiming first at the most frequent users of publicly funded emergency services. And it’s making quick headway since its launching a little more than a year ago. Brian Maienschein, who heads the project, offered a report card last week. So far, 17 of the hardest cases are housed and in rehabilitation programs, and the proof of success is in the numbers. Maienschein says the cost to society for each of the chronic homeless is in six figures. When you break it down, it adds up. In the past year, he says, those 17 homeless accounted for 348 ambulance rides, 402 ER visits, 464 inpatient services and 741 jailings. That’s $4.2 million a year for the 17, or roughly $250,000 each. “We can take them off the streets,” he says, “for $40,000 to $50,000 each.”

Now he’s the victim. After stealing his credit card info, some scofflaw has been using August’s name to send out USPS envelopes with counterfeit checks as bait in a scam known as the “Nigerian scheme.” Added insult: Two of the bogus checks came back to August, stamped “Addressee Unknown.” ... Former U-T columnist Richard Louv, whose best-selling book “Last Child in the Woods” began a worldwide movement to connect children with the natural world, continues the campaign in a new book, “The Nature Principle,” due May 11 from Algonquin ... Chrissy Russo, Fox 5 TV’s 8-by-10 glossy meteorologist, has left on vacation, so confirmation will have to wait. But sharp-eyed watchers of the news show say they’ve spotted something shiny on the ring finger of her left hand.
