Marcophiles: A memorial celebration for a memorable Marco woman

— Joy Shinn, who passed away January 31 in Arizona, was a friend to many Marco Islanders over the years, including us.

She and her husband Fred lived, worked and played here for years before moving to their next “retirement” adventure in Sedona, Arizona.

Now Fred is coming back to Marco to see old friends and neighbors at a memorial service for Joy. It is scheduled for 11 a.m., next Wednesday (May 4), at San Marco Catholic Church.

To say that Joy’s name is appropriate for the way she and Fred lived life together is an understatement. They met in college and married soon after graduation. Their 52 years of marriage was, in many ways, a whirlwind of hard work, travel, excitement and active participation in community life, here and in Sedona.

Joy worked at several local banks here. She and Fred were active in the Marco Players and the Marco Island Yacht Club.

We recall looking forward to seeing them at almost any civic event, largely because they brought to every situation a smile, a handshake or a hug and a contagious love of life.

Joy loved animals as well and supported the Marco Island and Sedona Humane Societies. She and Fred were active in Sedona as well, especially with Friends of the Forest and as volunteers with the Sedona Police Department.

If you happen to see Fred while he’s here for the Joy’s memorial service next Wednesday, stop and say hello. You’ll be glad you did.
