They're cookies, but for canines

BUCYRUS -- Diana Shroll has gone to the dogs.

A desire to do something low-key and fun while coping with menopause and an empty nest is behind the Crawford County businesswoman's latest venture. Shroll, a Mary Kay director who owns DT Petroleum with her husband Tim, has developed her own line of doggy snacks, the Canine Cookie Jar.

"Homemade treats without sugar or salt or preservatives are a much healthier treat for our canine friends," Shroll said.

That's what Kay Smith likes about the products she purchased for her boxers, Lucy and Lola.

"I guess I like that they're all natural," the Bucyrus dental office employee said. "She does flavors the dogs like."

Smith gave Canine Cookie Jar treats to her sisters' dogs for Christmas.

"Everybody liked them," she said. "I think it's a great idea."

The treats were also a big hit at March's Pet Expo in Columbus.

"I made over 300 dozen and came home with 13 dozen," Shroll said of the three-day event. "It was a great learning experience that I used to critique my business so I could improve on some things."

The 52-year-old who ends her emails with the Bible verse "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," will be doing more shows from now until October. A pet store in Logan, Eight Sisters Bakery in Mount Gilead and Southland Drive Thru and DOG Grooming of Bucyrus are selling the products. Shroll is talking with other local businesses about adding the line that includes Snickerpoodles, Party Pupcakes and Barkday cakes. All orders are fresh baked and shipped within 48 hours.

The petite blond version of the Energizer Bunny has maintained a full plate for years. In addition to helping run the family business on the west edge of Bucyrus, Shroll is coming up on her 15th year with Mary Kay. Her cosmetics business has had as many as 300 salespeople and now includes 200 consultants in nine states. As a group they have earned eight vehicles, including the famed pink Cadillacs, and been recognized nationally by the parent corporation.

Once son Dr. Joshua Shroll and daughter Ashley Shroll, a second-year student at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, were on their own, the 1976 Wynford High School graduate was looking for a new challenge.

"I have always loved to bake and I love animals, especially dogs," Shroll said of how she came up with the dog delights.

Ashley suggested her mom might start a canine bakery and helped with the research into the treats that include carob, cinnamon, carrot and spinach in their ingredients.
