Preston County Sherrifs Warn of Home Repair Scammers
TUNNELTON -- The Preston County Sheriff's Department has arrested a man accused of trying to scam people into home improvements.Sheriff's deputies charged 48-year old Patrick McAtee of Kingwood with two counts of fraudulent schemes and one count of false pretenses.
They say he agreed to make repairs to a home in Rowlesburg and took a $2,290 deposit.
Another attempt was repair work for Rosemary Bolyard's home outside of Tunnelton.
Bolyard says she feels betrayed and scammed, after giving Patrick McAtee $1,300 to replace drywall and put up Sheetrock to patch up her ceiling.
"He said that he was going to get the materials and that he would go to Lowe's that day on a Saturday, and if I had the money, he would go get it. I took him at his words," she said.
Bolyard contacted McAtee after she found his advertisement in the paper.
"Just because they have an ad in the paper, doesn't mean it’s a good thing," said Preston County Sheriff's Dept. Cpl. J.H. Bryan.
Bolyard says after giving McAtee the money up front, she never heard from him again.
"Then after about a week, he would quit taking our phone calls, he would not return them," she said.
Bryan says that McAtee's contracting license expired in 2007. He advertised in local papers as McAtee's Construction. He offering services like roof repairs, interior/exterior decking, and pool repairs.
Bryan says this case like many others across the country happen because many of the victims of the schemes are elderly.
"He would play on people's sympathies and just take their money and run," Bryan said.
Bolyard, 62, is also a widow, and thought she could trust McAtee.
"It was pretty hurtful, because he talked about how he liked to help elderly people and give them a break," she said.
Byran says people should do thorough research before picking a contractor to do home improvement work.
"Check with you friends, check with your neighbors, just don't take someone's word because they're honest and genuine," said Bryan.
Bryan says asking for references is one way to make a sure a contractor is legitimate.
Also, the West Virginia Department of Labor has a list of contractor's licenses and the better business bureau grades many contractors.
